Hot off the press... Britney Spears is officially on fire again. Her album has had good reviews...her hits are on fire now on top of that she's invading the fashion world! Unfortunately the dresses are a little simple and not to my taste. Why oh why the spots on a dress. The whole thought makes me queasy. Its amazing how famous people in the world of marketing buy stuff because someone wears it. Maybe someday i will design some hideous dress as a social experiment .

Liz Taylor the Toast of Fashion

In less than a week of Elizabeth Taylor's passing she is as alive as the legend she left the world with. Such is is an icon whom could never be overtaken or matched in grace or allure or elegance. Gone is one of hollywood screen actresses of the studio systems of days past. In true glamour and style she was one of the last few who were ogled and pampered with a silver spoon as rich and plentiful as a the royal family! As a young rising star, similar to the likes of Marilyn Monroe, she was molded into what the public wanted. Many designers during the heyday of her tenure would leap at the chance to clothe this screen siren.

At the time it was common for designers to be paid and comissioned by the studio to create a wardrobe of women in which many commoners aspired to be. Such was the pedestal Liz was placed on shining beams of radiance in every direction to all crossing her path. As a modern day statuette of beauty and perfection to the hilt, all was infected in thier hearts desire. A legend was born.

Long before models on the runway and the small globalized world we live in, actresses and actors were the beacon which forged trends had many running to stores for the latest hot fashion on screen.Where does it all fit in. The world is an ever constantly changing sphere with one constant .....movement in one direction...around. Elizabeth's passing has turned a fashion orbit even further to the outside reaches of space. But it shall too boomerang back along with the popularity and style which will one day complete its circle. The next time it does....one thing is assured Liz Taylor will do what shes always done in the past...lead the way for a full return to capture the essence and simplicity of pleasantville which is much to refined to ever let go. Full ball gown glamour is the retaliation to modern day sleaze. One day classless media will go back where it belongs... the trailer park!

Looking Into the Past Viewing the Future

While reading one of the many fashion greats biographies, there have been many parallels in which fashion remains at the forefront. It has been used as a symbol of status, luxury and decadence. During times of repression such as the French revolution and the great world wars the output has morphed into an entirely new being. Rationing of many coveted natural fabrics such as silk, cotton and wool forced the creative world into a limited and inhibited box. Collections in Paris at the time reflected the times and general atmosphere in Europe with the onslaught of war. Only a small handful of designers remained on the home front to stand up and translate their oppression within collections at that time.

Much has been indicative of fashion during that period. Military inspired themes dominated the runways in the small, stuffy and ambiguous venues. Fashion and creative freedom was almost fostered as a dirty little secret while couturiers scrambled to show allegiance to the resistance in a mundane and subtle way. Colour has always been an important counterpart in the celebration of life and liberty. Vibrant and striking colours of the past were replaced with dowdy depressing colours found on the front lines of the war effort. Paris had been seized for the second time within the preceding two centuries. Stark was encompassing and engrossing within the confines of alien invasion. Thus immensely different than the bourgeoisie revolution historically driven by necessity.

Exiles ran to the borders in search of peace and preservation by venturing to the borders of freedom. Many former luxury jet set towns and villas became strongholds of arriving refugees and those fleeing the fascist regime overtaking France. Few couturiers remained to sustain the eye of a long gruelling hurricane.

After many years of impeding brutality Dior's new look made fashion hit its first crescendo after the long bitter war. The styles were stark in comparison to the austere clothes that preceded this new revolutionary form and grace which ensued following the premier of this collection. Aristocratic decadence had come back full circle and a much more glamourous and refined way. Dior was one of the true catalysts in the triumphant nostalgic return of old Hollywood in a new flamboyant luxurious way.

Cyclic tendencies in fashion are synonymous with the times in which the modern sophisticate lives. In order to tap into future trends and fresh looks one must reflect upon the mirror of the past. One deep gaze beyond the facade into the essence shaping a generation bygone will give the sum of the elements to manifest from humanity's modern day psyche. Understanding the effervescent emotion radiating within modern culture one can truly resurrect in the likeness of the phoenix. After the final puzzle piece is placed a clear composite view takes hold. Reflect into your mirror and view a tiny fragment in the puzzle of divine creation.
